White Horse Theory

(This was sent in by one of our viewers)

Every single girl has at one point in time sat on an old dusty rug or blanket, arms widespread in the air and sang the words to “A Whole New World”. Not to mention splashed around in the bathtub, constricting your legs in a perfect fin-like motion and singing through the shower’s echo, “Part of Your World.” I of course, would have to plead guilty.

Now why do we do this(White horse Theory)? Simple. Girls like to dream. As Snow White so gracefully put it, “I’m dreaming one day my prince will come, to find me and take me away.” All she had to do was sing this little, yet repetitive phrase next to a wishing well with every animal in the forest accompanying her high pitch vocals and then voila!- handsome Prince Charming comes trotting along atop his dashing white horse- thus the White Horse theory.

It happens in movies all the time. It’s what we feed on. Its how we get what we want- living vicariously through some sort of princess animation or digital pixels. So if it happens to them why can’t it happen to us!

At some point in time this bubble will be popped when reality hits us and we realize there is no Prince Charming out there. Or is there?  Spencer W. Kimball said: “While marriage is difficult, and discordant and frustrated marriages are common, yet real, lasting happiness is possible, and marriage can be more an exultant ecstasy than the human mind can conceive. This is within the reach of every couple, every person. "Soul mates" are fiction and an illusion; and while every young man and young woman will seek with all diligence and prayerfulness to find a mate with whom life can be most compatible and beautiful, yet it is certain that almost any good man and any good woman can have happiness and a successful marriage if both are willing to pay the price”. (Marriage and Divorce, BYU Sept. 1976

So does Prince Charming exist? It appears he doesn’t. But then again I would venture to say that it is all in the eye of the beholder. The guy I am going to marry will be my Prince Charming. Not because he can rescue me from a high tower while slaying dragons and singing of his love for me; but because like the prince in all the movies he worked to get his fair lass, and it’s been said that you work the hardest for the things you want most.

I do think that just about any two people who are willing to pay the price can have a happy marriage. I also think that we shouldn’t settle for something good if we could have something better or even best. After all, marriage is for eternity- the biggest decision we will ever make.
